Summer In The City

June 29, 2017Fashion, Travel

How to combat the heat, sun & endless miles of concrete. . .

Can’t decide whether it’s time for Nikes or the adorable new sandals you got on sale last week??  Want the best of both worlds?  Read on to discover my tips for fashionable and comfortable summer-time city travel.

The Conflict

So you’ve just touched down in a new city. The people, traffic and construction on every corner work together to scare you the heck away from exploring the concrete jungle. There are a few things you are guaranteed to find no matter what city you plan on visiting next: horns, sirens, screaming babies, screaming old men, street food, school trips, fanny packs – the works.  And if you’re planning on pounding some city pavement this summer, you’re in for one more joyous element – the weather.
I recently got back from my second “big city” adventure this summer, and if I have learned one thing from my travels, it’s this: what you wear makes all the difference.
Now, I understand the vast majority of my readers aren’t fashion bloggers and would probably be all the merrier in some athletic gear and tennis shoes when vacationing under the sky-scrappers.  But I just know there are a handful of crazy people (like me) who time and time again choose fashion over function, and cut their days short in a shameful, shoeless Uber ride back to the hotel.
There is something about the city that makes me want to pull out all the stops and act like Vogue magazine photogs are following me around all day.  Reality check: they aren’t.  I found some middle ground while touring around Washington D.C. this weekend, and I’m happy to report there weren’t too many regrettable outfit choices.
zesty.

Problem

I’m not someone who feels totally comfortable wearing shorts and a tank top around a city.  It’s just not me.  So I really struggle when it’s 90-something degrees to find the perfect “keep-me-cool” outfit.

Solved

My favorite way to combat this is by wearing a midi dress like the one I wore in this New York City post.  But on more active days, that is not always an option.  Shorts and an oversized shirt are what I landed on for a day of bike riding and sight-seeing.  Since I was in the sun all morning, I was thankful for the sleeves which protected my skin from the rays.  If you’re planning on wearing a little more fabric up top during the summer, the easiest rule is to opt for breathable fabrics like cotton that let the occasional (and very welcomed) cool breeze in.

Problem

I actually don’t have too much of an issue wearing tennis shoes with any given outfit.  I actually think they add a cool edge when paired correctly.  But let’s say you never wear your gym shoes outside of, well, the gym.  I hate to break it to you, but anything other than a sneaker or made-for-walking-sandal is likely not going to end well in the grand scheme of things.  I re-learned this lesson on my trip to D.C., but hey. . . sometimes getting the shot for the blog can be painful.  That’s what I tell myself anyway.

Solved

There are so many variations on sneakers these days.  My latest obsession are espadrilles/sneaker hybrids.  They have all the comfort of a regular sneaker with a little kick of summertime sass. Regardless, I don’t have a pair in my collection at the mom. so I opted for my good ole’ white trainers.  Really, these should be a staple in every girl’s wardrobe if you ask me.  They work with dresses, shorts, jeans, etc.  And I definitely recommend something like this for all you city travelers this summer.
Extra feet-saving tip: when you can, utilize a city’s bike-share or Citi Bike stations.  They save you from miles of pointless concrete-pounding.

Problem

Hair. Lots of hair.

Solved

Heat styling is simply impossible because of the summer humidity.  Look to ponytails and braids to keep your locks out of your face and off of your neck.

What to Bring

A few extras that should find their way into your bag when out on the town this summer.

This blister-preventing magic stick.  Just buy it and say thank you.
This portable iPhone fan.  I have lost count of the number of times I wish I hadn’t left this one off my list during my city travels.  It’s weird, but oh my it is needed.
A refillable water bottle. Just because you aren’t lounging on the beach  or hiking a mountain. . . you get the picture.  Stay hydrated no matter your travel destination.

Sunscreen. Because the sun doesn’t discriminate, even in the middle of a city.

That’s all for now, folks.  Check back later in the week for my second post from the streets of D.C.  If you need a little more vaca-spiration (new word??), I’ll link my recent posts from New York City below.  Happy traveling!
